New Jersey Collaborators

NJ Public Universities

Summary

The US onAir Network will be working with volunteers from New Jersey universities, colleges, and nonprofit organizations to oversee the curation and moderation of posts, aircasts (online discussions), and in person events for the New Jersey onAir Hub …  related to federal, state, and local elections and government.

Our first outreach will be to Rutgers University partly because of its proximity to the state capital. We have identified many of Rutgers’s civic engagement, academic, internship and research programs related to making democracy and civic responsibility a focus of higher learning on their campus … for students, faculty, staff, and local community. This post, over time, will have similar information on other collaborating organizations in the state.

Contact ben.murphy@onair.cc for more information on how to involve your organization.

About

The Rutgers onAir onAir chapter will initially focus on training interested undergrad and graduate students on how to curate Rutgers onAir content especially submitting Top News articles, events, videos, and information and moderating forums in each post they curate.

Student curators will also work with state senate and house committee chairs to produce aircasts on issues being discussed and bills being proposed in their committees.

During election season, students with other other organizations like the League of Women Voters, will coordinate and produce aircasted debates with candidates.

Rutgers University- New Brunswick

University Mission

As one of the leading comprehensive public research universities in the nation, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, has the threefold mission of

  • providing for the instructional needs of New Jersey’s residents through its undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education programs;
  • conducting the innovative research that contributes to the medical, environmental, social, and cultural well-being of the state, as well as aiding the economy and the state’s businesses and industries; and
  • performing public service in support of the needs of the residents of the state and its local, county, and state governments.

Each component of the university’s mission reinforces and supports the other two.

Rutgers is dedicated to teaching that meets the highest standards of excellence, to conducting research that breaks new ground, and to providing services, solutions, and clinical care that help individuals and the local, national, and global communities where they live.

The Office of Community Affairs serves as a link between Rutgers and the community at large. It helps local residents and organizations connect to the university’s many resources by matching community needs with university expertise and service.

Rutgers in the Community

On campus and off, Rutgers is working to build a stronger relationship with New Brunswick, Piscataway, and the surrounding community. Along the way, we hope to become a better partner for our neighbors. A first step is making sure that everyone—from residents to students, faculty, and staff—has access to Rutgers’ community offerings.

Visit our directory of Rutgers programs for the community to learn about programs and services that bring Rutgers’ resources into the community. Residents can connect with university offerings, from swim lessons for kids to expert advice for small business owners. Read more about community engagement at Rutgers.

Students who elect to major or minor in political science have access to a wide variety of internship experiences.  Most of the programs below offer three credits of academic credit, but some offer more.  Students may apply six credits (two courses) of independent study, internship, or senior thesis work toward the major or minor in Political Science, but they may apply 33 credits (11 courses) toward general graduation requirements.  As a result, students may pursue more than one internship.   Programs are open to juniors and seniors.  Additional requirements sometimes apply.

Political Science Programs

Undergraduate Program

Our undergraduate political science program is grounded in the classics yet oriented toward the future.

We start with ancient Greek political thought to lay the foundations for understanding political action. These and more modern political philosophers suggest ways to live and to govern the community.

We build on those foundations with modern quantitative analysis, institutional exploration of American government, comparative analysis of the world, and practical internship experience.

Students learn strong critical thinking and communication skills.

We explore what “is” and what “ought to be.”

We will expose you to normative understandings of the world while giving you the tools to confront and critique the modern world.

The degree combines political philosophy, public policy, international comparisons, entrepreneurial action, and practical experience.

Our students follow many career paths, from the law to business, government service, diplomacy, and social activism.

Master of Arts in Political Science

The M.A. Program in Political Science – Concentration in the United Nations and Global Policy studies, (UNMA) cultivates career professionals who understand complex global policy topics and who have the hard skills to operate successfully in international organizations, corporations, governments and non-profit institutions. Through rigorous academic training, our graduates develop comprehensive critical thinking, research, and policy analysis expertise, as well as an extensive knowledge-base of international policies and topics necessary to excel in the arena of international affairs, development, and more.  Whether you are Rutgers student, prospective student, applicant, faculty or a member of the general public, we invite you to explore the rich content of our website as you will find useful information about UNMA program, careers in global policy, profiles of our extremely diverse student body and many more.

PhD program

The PhD program provides cutting-edge training in a supportive environment. Our approach is methodologically pluralistic, encouraging the use of both quantitative and qualitative approaches to research. Classes are small and students work closely with faculty in their field, who often co-author articles with their students, in addi-tion to providing mentorship throughout students’ own research.

All students who are admitted to the program are offered funding packages that cover tuition expenses and a combination of fellowship stipends and positions as teaching assistants (TAs) or research assistants (GAs) to provide living expenses. Funding is limited, and so we also admit students who are supported by outside scholarships.

Being located within easy reach of New York, Trenton, Newark, Philadelphia and Washington, the program has extensive resources for pursuing advanced studies and research in politics. Rutgers is a member of the Inter-University Doctoral Con-sortium, which allows our graduate students to take courses at other universities in the area, including Columbia University, New York University, the New School, and Princeton University.
